Fun History

Berger Cookies are a Baltimore, Maryland specialty, created by German‑American bakers but fully rooted in American cuisine. Thick fudge topping + soft vanilla cookie base = classic American regional dessert.

INGREDIENTS

Cookies

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 Tbsp baking powder

  • 1½ tsp salt

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1½ cups sugar

  • 3 large eggs, room temperature

  • 4½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup sour cream

Chocolate Icing

  • 4 Tbsp unsalted butter

  • 3½ cups semisweet chocolate chips

  • 4 oz unsweetened chocolate, chopped

  • 2 Tbsp light corn syrup

  • 1½ cups sour cream

DIRECTION

Bake the Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.

  2. Beat butter, baking powder, salt, and vanilla until combined.

  3. Add sugar; beat until light and fluffy, 5–7 minutes.

  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

  5. Add flour alternately with sour cream, beginning and ending with flour. Do not overmix.

  6. Drop dough by 3 tablespoonfuls onto greased baking sheets.

  7. With wet fingers, flatten each mound into a 3‑inch circle.

  8. Bake 10 minutes, or until edges just begin to brown.

  9. Cool on the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Make the Chocolate Icing

  1. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt butter, semisweet chips, unsweetened chocolate, and corn syrup; stir until smooth.

  2. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature.

  3. Beat in sour cream using a hand mixer on high speed until the icing thickens and lightens in color, 6–7 minutes.

Finish

  1. Spread 2 Tbsp icing over the flat side of each cookie.

  2. Let stand until set.

  3. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
